Dr. Sabyasachi “Sachi” Mahapatra

Dr. Sabyasachi “Sachi” Mahapatra, 74, of Lincoln, died on September 23, 2018. Dr. Mahapatra was born October 19, 1943, to Ghanashyam & Basanti (Bhuyan) Mahapatra in Cuttack, Odisha, India. Sachi was a gifted interventional cardiologist, whose legendary work ethic was matched only by his love of patients. His career began in India, continued in Detroit, Mich., and Louisville, Ky., and flourished in Lincoln. Sachi was incredibly proud to be one of the founding physicians of the Nebraska Heart Hospital. In his free time, Sachi loved travel, photography, and scuba diving. His most cherished memories were spent in retirement as a grandfather and uncle to his growing family in the USA.
Preceded in death by his parents; brother, Sakya Singha Mohapatra. Survived by his wife, Amrita; children, Jyoti (Jeff) Mahapatra, Suraj (Katrina) Mahapatra, Ravi Mahapatra; grandchildren, Surina & Devan Burlington; siblings, Sunanda Parija, Snigdha Mahapatra, Vandana Bedi, Satyabrata Mahapatra, Subas (Chandra) Mahapatra; nieces and nephews, Seema (Sandeep), Pinky, (Sushmit), Sidharth (Namrata), Vivek (Himani), Saugata, and Shine.
A celebration of Sachi’s life will be at 5 p.m. Friday, September 28, at Embassy Suites in Lincoln. Service will begin at 6 p.m. Celebratory, colorful attire is encouraged. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, People’s City Mission, or the Fred & Pamela Buffet Cancer Center.
