From Olives and Grapes stores in Cocoa and Melbourne celebrate 10 years of oil and vinegar

If you want to discover the world of specialty olive oils and vinegars, Pam Shaia and Stan Pengelly are two people in Brevard you need to meet.

They are behind From Olives and Grapes, which has showcased these two precious liquids since it opened in Cocoa Village on June 30 of 2008. In 2012, the Merritt Island couple added a second tasting room, this one in Melbourne, also devoted to the joys of oils and vinegars.

If you haven’t checked the Pengelly’s temples to oils and vinegars, you should make it a point to visit between 4 and 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, when they couple celebrates the 10th anniversary of their first store at both locations with complimentary treats made with their oils and vinegars.

Question: What is your history, guys?

Shaia: My hometown is Birmingham, Alabama. I worked for a global technology company. Stan and I moved to Florida in September of 1999 to pursue career opportunities.

Pengelly: I was born Sacramento, California. My previous job was as an engineer for Boeing.    

Q: How did you get involved in the olive oil business?

Pengelly: Pam was traveling in Illinois and happened upon a store that sold olive oil and vinegars.  The owner of that store mentored us to get us started.

Q: Signature oil?

Pengelly: Our signature olive oil is Tuscan Herb.

Q: Signature vinegar?

Pengelly: Our 18-year Traditional Style

Q: What other products do you carry?

Pengelly: We offer a variety of pastas, spices, sauces and tapenades, dipping dishes and other kitchen accessories.

Q: Your own favorite olive oil and vinegar?

Shaia: Our favorite olive oil is a pure non-flavored oil from Spain called Picual.  Our favorite vinegar is Sicilian Lemon White.

Q: You also have a third store, correct?

Shaia: We also have Tails at the Barkery, which specializes in fresh-baked pet treats, “tail bites” and designer wear. I had researched the concept since 2010. I spent the next four years researching and testing the market for quality pet treats.  In 2014, I began the process of finalizing the details and Tails at the Barkery opened March 1, 2016, in Cocoa Village.

Q: Family?

Shaia: We have been married over 26 years. We have four rescue shelties and are aunt and uncle to many more.

Q: Hobbies?

Shaia: Adopting, raising and training Shetland sheepdogs.

Pengelly: Foreign travel photography, mosaic art, building and flying airplanes and tango dancing.

Q: Three words that describe you?

Pam: Fireball of energy.

Pengelly: Quiet and Strength.

Q: What is on your bucket list?

Shaia: To visit Cuba, Lebanon, Spain and Turkey, to win an AKC Title in Rally with my Sheltie, Levi, and to win an AKC Title in FastCat with my other Sheltie, Noel.

Pengelly: To get really, really good at tango, build a man’s necktie and accessories store and open a single malt liquor bar.

Q: Famous person you’d love to see at From Olives and Grapes?

Shaia: Anthony Bourdain, if he were still alive.
