Rodenburgs switch focus to international cycling tour
After 30 years of leading bicycle tours around Nebraska, lifelong cyclists and travel enthusiasts Rich Rodenburg and Susan Larson Rodenburg have started a new endeavor that will allow them to lead cycling adventures in Europe and beyond.
“We love exploring new places on a bicycle,” said Larson Rodenburg, who hatched the idea for Hound Dog Cycling Adventures with her husband, Rich. “Europe is filled with beautiful destinations and safe bicycling routes. Bicycling is part of the culture, so it is one of our favorite places to ride. We’re excited to share these types of experiences with our cycling friends.”
Their inaugural international cycling adventure is an eight-day bike and boat tour along the Danube River through Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary, Aug. 2-12. The tour features cycling and floating through the Austrian and Hungarian countryside along the Danube River, as well as art, culture, food and history unique to the area.
Highlights include visits to Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest.
“What attracts us to the bike and boat concept is that it allows so much flexibility,” Larson Rodenburg said. “While we offer daily routes ranging from 16-37 miles, the routes are entirely self-guided so you are truly on your own to explore and ride as little or much as you like, or you can just lounge on the deck of the boat or hang out in the quaint little towns we visit. All you have to do is make sure you’re back on the boat for supper.”
The Rodenburgs, who founded the Tour de Nebraska five-day bicycle adventure in 1988, sold the tour to Charlie and Kim Schilling last summer.
“We found the perfect family to continue the Tour de Nebraska tradition, which allows us the opportunity to embark on our dream to explore the world with our cycling friends,” Larson Rodenburg said.
The Rodenburgs are partnering with Executive Travel, which will manage logistics and travel arrangements for Hound Dog Cycling Adventures.
“We hope to expand to two tours a year starting in 2019, Larson Rodenburg said. “Our vision is to offer a wide variety of unique cycling adventures all over the world.”
